Origin of 10+3i

Well,10+3i is an aspiring movie production company currently based in Surat,because the person who started this nonsense is currently doing engineering at NIT,Surat.

This menace began because Nikhil's uncle gifted him a handycam on his birthday and a few idiots around him like this guy and this guy encouraged him in his noble endeavour to wreck havoc on people around him.Matters are made worse with the entry of jobless fools like Yugank and Kunaal.With another devil called the internet aiding them, they plan to spread this disease to people far and wide. If you've read this till now, you are 67% infected.At this point, if you contact a pediatrician, there are 89% chances of you being treated and cured. If you are really intent on dying,read on.

But why 10+3i?

Nikhil happens to love his college a lot . So he gave a very 'engineering sounding complex name'.That is what people said when he thought of this name.That made him very happy and he decided to stick with that name.The reason being, it sounded like an 'engineering name'. Finally he had done something that had something to do with engineering. What if it is only in his final year?!

On a more serious note,here's reason and it is not all that complex.Nikhil's college is at a distance of 10 kilometers from the railway station.So, that explains the 10. It is situated near Ichchhanath,a Shiva temple.Now,Shiva has three eyes. That, accounts for the 3i. Just to appear a bit 'fundoo', he put in the '+' and made it to a complex number and give it an engeering connotation.Simple?Fundoo?Complex?.You decide.

We have already finished two projects.

1.A humorous(?) public service ad 'Over and Out' about drinking and driving.I mean,drinking and not driving.

2.A documentary 'de Young Basanti' on the movie Rang De Basanti, its effect on the youth, their views on the movie and India.What according to them are the problems plaguing India and what they plan to do for the country.

Ray of Good Hope

Enthusiasm is the first ingredient for any recipe in this idea house. And our Avinash Katkoju has loads of it. 10+3i presents to you one of its project, a short one minute film- Ray Of Hope.

Shot with a motive of underplaying or overcoming a natural shortcoming in humans 'blindness'. It is a short and simple clip which leaves a strong message behind in a spectators mind. It shows that a man being blind is not really his inability or excuse for not being able to accomplish tasks people like us who can watch this video or read this post can easily do. Indeed its a challenge to cross the hurdle and leap across to the winning side. The character is shown to do exactly the same.
The movie is only one minute long and is able to capture the whole essence of its aim in totality. The theme of photo shoot is captured very well and it ends with a very good note.
Avniash was associated with us in making of our last venture Broken Threads as well and has shown great interest in movie making. He is also to unwrap and execute his new plan very soon which again will reach all of you through 10+3i.

Over And Out - The Campaign Against Drunken Driving

This is how it all began. This was 10+3i's first project. Shot in Hostel number 6 of NIT, Surat on a very busy Sunday afternoon. Busy everyone was, with sleeping. I had just got my camera then and this idea struck me.

Concept Note: Hot Tea Party is a party set up to promote the habit of drinking tea while it is hot. The inspiration to this came from the fact that tea served to me in the office always used to get cold and I never drank it while it was hot. So this campaign was created to serve as a reminder of that fact.

Broken Threads - No Child's Play This

Broken Threads is a documentary by 10+3i media, exposing the dark underbelly of Surat's famous textile and diamond cutting industries, where child labour is rampant and also presents a few children rescued from the clutches of these industries, thanks to well-meaning efforts of NGOs like Pratham.

Background:
Surat, as one of the fortnightly magazine mentions, is the fastest growing city in the country. Its not a very surprising fact if you know that 80% of worlds diamonds get their shine here and Hazira, the industrial hub in city attracts thousands of crores of investment every year. One more industry making Surat shine almost blinding is the textiles.

The textile industry is immensely huge and intricately deep rooted. A huge chunk of city's population apart from the floating one and the indirectly dependent ones earn their daily bread from this. At every level, right from labourer to the mill owners are diverse in so many distinctive ways. Coming in from far away places, adapting to a whole new culture and value systems, leading a varied lifestyle, the people involved in this industry have woven an interesting social fabric of the city in addition to most of what are on our bodies as well.

The plight of the child labourers:

Amidst all the activity of these mills, we found a few human lives who deserved more than what was on offer to them. A more than just a few children we could see were deprived of the essence of childhood and instead are burdened with reponsibility. The innocence in them sentenced almost to captivation, was appaling. These are the children who are employed in textile mills for jobs like ribbon-winding, colouring etc which saves their employers a few hard crisp notes. They are brought in from different and farthest parts of country just to save the cost on their education and upbringing. Some of them don't know whereabouts of their parents and some though know them are left wondering at their ownself inspite of them. There are cases where the child has been beaten up by alcoholic parent for the sake of a few pennies if which he couldn't bring home.

About Broken Threads:

The documentary 'broken threads' shows this evil in the light of law, scoietal responsibility, and humanity. Children talked their hearts out to our team, and the video footage gives a very good idea of need there is to bring them up. Documentary is shot all around the city showing the pitiful working conditions in textile mills as well as their life after the work hours. Enough light has been thrown on the serious concerns plaguing their lives like long working hours, mediocre pays, substandard working conditions etc.

The film also shows the steps being taken by government and other organisations to help the cause. PRATHAM, an NGO working in the same lines and its programme leader Mr Chandrashekhar were of immense help during the whole project. Thanks to him we could get close to the children who are getting a new lease into their lives from the organisations work. We had the chance to be with them at their own small abode(PRATHAM) and were more than happy to see their smilies blooming at the words 'say cheese'. The video has talks by different children about their experiences in PRATHAM as well as before that when they were forced to earn. Mr chandrashekhar has also given his valuable inputs regarding the problem in hand, its seriousness, laws and rules and also the work of his organisation.

The team's experiences:

10+3i team for 'broken threads' had a few old and a few new names in it. Documentary has in most of its parts narration by our friend and mate Yugank. One more friend and team menber Divya who has been in touch with PRATHAM even before 'Broken Threads' happened and so could connect to the children there very well and this very fact is evident from the frankness and openess chidren have shown in the videos. Juniors pair of Avinash's Katkoju and Mishra did propel us at every point of time during making with their enthusiasm. Jithin and Vivek again two dear buddies were there for anything and eveything right from camera work to editing clips. I was assigned the editing job and i hope I've done justice to it.

New venture- Music!!

First things first!!

1. The short film shoot has been put off(not indefinitely!) due to the sudden realisation we are engineering students. But it WILL happen!!

2. So we decided the next best thing to do was diversify and get into music and music videos!!

About the song

The song 'Ek Sapna tha' is a typical campus song which echoes the sentiments of us final year students who are about to leave the college in a few days' time. The song talks of the good, bad times we spent together and also looks at the future, about how the money we'll earn is no of value compared to the evenings we spent together.

Must admit that the lyrics though are a little on the paler side, but that was the best I could come up with. That I am a South Indian is no excuse, but somehow we were hardpressed for time and that whole project came off in two days flat speaks a lot of our commitment. Seriously! I guess none of us slept for those two days and that morning when we recorded the song on the terrace, everything fell into place so well and the world was suddenly more beautiful. Some sense of acheivement that was!

The song is quite popular in the college. Hope you'll like it as well.

A report on the first screening of 10plus3i's documentary 'de Young Basanti' during Kshithij at SCET,Surat on March 9,2006.

‘de Young Basanti’ - anyone hearing this can make out it has got something to do with the latest Rakyesh Mehra - Aamir Khan movie. Yes that is how we have named our first documentary.

A video footage of more than 2hrs, after putting in more than 2 sleepless nights on editing (hats off to Nikhil) had yielded a 25 minute proper documentary. Now the task on hand was to get proper publicity for out product. This particular blog actually is the report on our first step in this direction.

9th of march was the date, an ‘event’ful day for Surat, two main engineering colleges of the city are buzzing with the fests going on in each of them. KHSITIJ the techfest of SCET and our very own SPARSH the culfest of SVNIT. There couldn’t have been any better time than that day to conduct the first screening of ‘de young basanti’. We remain indebted to PT-Professional Tutorials for arranging a time slot during KSHITIJ for the screening. The time table for the day wasn’t any relaxing for the people in 10+3i either. Me and Jayanth were involved in one or the other Sparsh work all through the day and Nikhil had to conduct a quiz at 4:30, while the screening was supposed to be at 6pm. Then somehow we managed to wrap everything up and reach the venue just before 6, while two of our juniors,Pranav and Anand made sure everything was in place there before the start.Real sweet juniors they are!. But then at 6 it wasn’t dark enough to screen anything with a LCD projector in an open air theatre, so we waited for half an hour at the end of which everything was perfect, just beginning to dark, a nice cloudy sky, and more than 200 people seated in that place waiting for us to start the proceedings.

Nikhil, the senior most of us all gave just a brief on what can the audience expect from the documentary to be followed and we started off. The sound system though wasn’t great but still it was just fine enough for the A.R.Rahman’s beats in the backdrop to keep people interested in the beginning atleast. Documentary was all about the views and opinions of Indian youth or say Surat youth or to be more precise our college youth about the movie and the Indian society shown in it. There were around 15 people who spoke in the video out of which some 6 were girls and rest guys. Can’t really say if the audience there listened to what was coming out of the speakers but yes they liked our college girls for sure. So hootings began, it started off with ‘ooh-aaah’s for girls and ended with ‘1 2 3 4 band karo yeh atyachar’ when guys were on the screen.

Actually ‘de young basanti’ was to be followed with the screening of its parent movie ‘Rang de Basanti’ on that very same screen. So the anxiety of the audience there seemed a bit justified. Still our juniors present there were very upset with lukewarm response we got there. But then being first timers in the field and that too making a documentary on social themes we can’t expect a star like acceptance anywhere. Though that was the funda we gave our juniors to keep them grounded, in some corner of our minds too the question ‘didn’t we deserve something better than this?’ was making rounds. We had different funda to get ourselves going also, ‘only people who are hooted at have the rights to hoot at others’. With the singing night of SPARSH already on by the time we got back, we had our chance of hooting now and believe me that relieves you of all the frustration inside you better than any marijuana or vodka.
